  Public Policy

The Alliance’s primary public policy role is to serve as a trusted, objective expert and valued information resource. Our purpose is to enable and encourage informed decision-making by consumers, employers, physicians and other health care professionals to improve health care quality, efficiency, affordability and patient satisfaction.

How to Engage the Alliance in Public Policy Discussion

Approach

The ability to stay focused is important to our success. This is especially true in public policy, given the volume of local, state and federal policy measures affecting health care. The Alliance relies heavily on our participants to handle advocacy work. However, to guide decisions about whether and how the Alliance might get involved in public policy discussions, our Board adopted Public Policy Guidelines. These guidelines describe our policy priority areas and the process through which issues are analyzed and positions taken, if any.

The Alliance's overarching philosophy is a preference for incentives and innovative and effective approaches that encourage and reward actions that result in more effective and affordable health care. Elected officials and other public policy makers play a key role by contributing to the discussion at the Alliance table, promoting efforts that reward improved health care performance, and leading by example in applying aligned incentives to health care purchasing activities affecting public employees, their dependents, and others receiving taxpayer-funded health care.

How to Engage the Alliance

Alliance participants are encouraged to share their legislative priorities and action alerts about particular bills or regulations with Alliance staff. Before taking a position on a measure, the Alliance will follow the collaborative process outlined in the Public Policy Guidelines. Information about legislative alerts and positions under consideration by Alliance leadership will be posted on the participant-only section of this website so it is available to Alliance members. When time permits, notice of positions under consideration will also be emailed to Alliance participants.

To become an Alliance participant, we encourage you to join the Alliance.
